GRIDTWIN – TSO
GRIDTWIN-TSO: Deep-Tech Digital Twin for TSO Transformer Behaviour, Overload Management and Asset Intelligence
The GRIDTWIN-TSO project is financed through the Loan Agreement (Loan No. 9558-HR) between the Republic of Croatia and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) for the Digital, Innovation and Green Technology Project (DIGIT).

About the project
Transmission system operators increasingly operate under grid congestion and high shares of renewable generation. Power transformers are therefore exposed to volatile thermal loading and occasional overloads. Existing monitoring rarely provides continuous, detailed insight inis to the condition of individual transformers. As a result, remedial actions are costly and available grid capacity goes unused.
GRIDTWIN-TSO develops and validates a transformer digital twin for transmission system operators. It builds on UNIFIVE ENERGY’s GridTwin platform. The digital twin combines physics-based models with machine learning to estimate hot-spot temperature, thermal stress, dynamic load rating and insulation ageing from operational measurements.
Objectives
- validate data acquisition and communication in a real transmission-grid environment
- develop and calibrate digital twin models on real operational data
- demonstrate ahead-of-time forecasting of overload and congestion risk and benchmark it against the operator’s existing tools.
- validate the business model and prepare the technology for market uptake
Expected results
- GridTwin technology matured from TRL 4 to TRL 5-6
- validated models for thermal state, dynamic rating and transformer lifetime assessment
- an user interface and integration interfaces for operator systems
- a business plan and go-to-market strategy
